Released by Rub Wrongways Records on compact disc, cassette, vinyl (sorry, sold out!), and streaming, Jason To Jason is an album by Jason Mazzotta, a singer/multi-instrumentalist living in Ridgewood, New York.

Jason To Jason was recorded and mixed by Scott Amore at Durham, Connecticut’s InnerSpace SoundLabs. The production leans a little on 1960s-70s pop, and Amore’s warm tones and hazy, psychedelic touches can be heard throughout. The record’s guest musicians help create lush arrangements, with analogue synthesizers, pedal steel guitar, penny whistle, and Gizmotron, the string-bending device created by 10cc’s Kevin Godley and Lol Creme.

The vocals and some overdubs were done at home studios, making Jason To Jason a marriage of studio magic and homespun charm.

While the punning title may suggest some sort of Bowie infatuation, Jason To Jason finds Ridgewood, NY resident Mazzotta mining an altogether balmier strand of pop songcraft. Louche drumbeats and muted keyscarry opener ‘Over The Lunch Café’ before the ‘Needles And Pins’/‘(I’ll) Feel A Whole Lot Better’ guitar riff is recycled once again for the bouncy ‘Tell Me Rita’. There’s some of The Apples In Stereo’s homespun lo-fi jangle,and Belle & Sebastian’s jaunty indie-boogie haunts ‘Number Four In Norway,' but as moods change and the instrumental palette shifts from piano and acoustic guitar-led reveries to electric rockers, Mazzotta stamps his own voice on everything. ‘StrawberryMoon’ (“Donovan goofing around with a drum machine,” in his own words) is a sunny delight, as is ‘May Song’, a gently stoned declaration of love in which the very organ you’re reading gets a namecheck.
