About Rub Wrongways Records

Northampton, Massachusetts is a small college town centered between Boston, New Haven, New York City and Montreal. It's been a haven for artists for the last century. Something about the location, or the air, or the water in the Pioneer Valley appeals to musicians and songwriters. It only makes sense that Rub Wrongways Records calls this place home. Started in 2002, this collective of musicians has stuck by the motto "It's a record label, no it's not." 

What is a record label? 
We're not sure, but we can tell you what we are. We are a group of friends and collaborators who love to make music. Many of the Rub Wrongways bands share members with other Rub Wrongways bands. We've all been playing together for years, we've developed styles and aesthetics together. We switch instruments, we switch bands, we try to keep each other on our toes. So, for example, the drummer for Gentle Hen and The Fawns is the writer and singer for Sitting Next To Brian, whose keyboard player is the a writer and singer for Beach Honey. The lead guitarist of Sitting Next To Brian is the leader of Gentle Hen and the bass player in Goldwater. It's a tangled web... don't untangle it. 

Does Rub Wrongways Records have a particular genre? 
Not really. Well, maybe. At Rub Wrongways, we look first to the song. Songwriting is the key. Genres aren't so important as long as there is a solid, interesting, song involved. We seek out compositions that are moving and memorable often with a twist of humor. Second we strive for an honest sound, a sound that was created by humans. The releases on the label include indie-pop, jangle-rock, anti-folk, classic-country, psychedelic, power-pop etc. 

Where Does The Money Go? 
Whenever you buy something from Rub Wrongways, all of the money goes straight to the artist.  We take nothing. (Learn more) 

Is Rub Wrongways Records seeking artists? 
Not really. We always are interested in hearing new music but we are not currently seeking out new artists.
